ISPS

After the terrorist attack in America on September 11, 2001, it was predicted that ships and port facilities could become a serious target of international terrorist attacks that know no borders. Studies and plans for the protection of ships and ports against such events were brought to the agenda and started to be implemented by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) at the 22nd General Assembly Meeting held in November 2001. However, in Turkey, this issue has not been adequately addressed and training has not been provided. Every captain working in international waters must be familiar with the ISPS regulation and be able to report it. I have been closely interested in ISPS legislation for many years and follow all the innovations. I have been through port state inspections many times in international waters before and passed all of them successfully. To be a good captain, first of all, it is necessary to master this legislation.

ISM

International safety management code..international safe management code.
ISM Code is the rules accepted by the International Maritime Organization in November 1993 and added to the 9th chapter of the Convention on the Safety of Life at Sea to ensure the safe management and operation of ships and to protect the seas from pollution.
All ships trading in international waters must comply with these rules and obtain a name certificate. It is the responsibility of the First Officer to report the crew's ISM Code training. However, in some boats, if there is no second captain, training and reporting are done by the captain. Although we are an advanced country in maritime, ISM Code training and reporting are known by very few captains. Every captain must know this legislation very well and be able to report it.

MLC 2006

MLC 2006 deals with a wide range of issues including seafarers' employment contracts and maritime companies' obligations under these contracts, working hours, health and safety, living spaces, subsistence standards and seafarers' welfare. The first step in crew management is to provide them with a comfortable and safe living space. For this purpose, the living space, nutrition and working conditions of the crew must be inspected and reported by the captain at certain periods. These reporting are inspected in great detail by the port state. In case of incomplete reporting, the captain is given time to correct it or, depending on the situation, the boat is temporarily banned from sailing.

MARPOL

International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, which means the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships;  It is an international convention put forward by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to prevent maritime interdiction that may occur related to the operation of ships or by accident. It consists of 5 parts. Each section describes the measures necessary to prevent marine pollution. It is very important for each captain to provide training to the crew regarding this contract at certain periods in order to keep our seas clean.

SOLAS

SOLAS (Safety Of Life At Sea). It is an international agreement that sets rules by examining all aspects of ship design criteria, from the features of communication devices to communication procedures, in terms of the safety of life and property, and determines the measures to be taken and the legal rules to be followed to ensure the safety of life and property on ships sailing in the world's seas.
SOLAS is for the safety of life and property, starting from the construction phase of ships; Signed by IMO member countries, which explains the designs of machinery, electricity and equipment, fire safety measures, features of lifesaving vehicles, radio communications, navigational safety, principles of transportation of dangerous goods, the names and scope of documents and documentation that must be present on ships, and determines the control methods for the implementation of the rules. It is a legal document. It is very important that all crew members working on the boat know and can implement this contract. Every issue for which the captain is responsible within the scope of this contract must be checked periodically by the captain.

NAVIGATION

There are very important issues that the captain must know in order for the boats to sail safely in the seas. The most important of these is to make a passage plan and be able to implement it. For this, it is necessary to be able to plan on the map, analyze the weather conditions well and use navigational aids perfectly. All corrections on the chart, newly added locations and all documents published by the oceanography office must be kept up to date and constantly evaluated by the captain.

SAILING

Sailing boats are inherently designed to move to their destination at certain angles by using wind force. Thanks to sailing according to the wind angle, sailing boats can move forward without using machine power. However, for this, the captain must analyze the wind very well and use the rigging very well. Otherwise, the boat may tip sideways or its mast may break.

MANEUVERING

A good captain must know how to maneuver at the entrances and exits of the liam, in narrow channels and in shallow waters. No mistakes can be made in the maneuver. The consequences could be very bad. That's why it is very important to receive training on this subject and watch a professional captain.
